2025-05-09 15:21 FH
Weight: 166 grams, BCS: 3.5
Note: Caught up for quick weight check
Attitude: BAR/flighty
Observations:
* Superficial/minor scabs bilateral carpi - no Tx required
* BCS = 3.5/4
* No pellet
* Demonstrated great lift after grounding
* Pt's flight is rather chaotic/unpredictable - Pt grazes wall w/ wings occasionally and has trouble w/ landings. Demonstrates great lift after grounding but maneuverability is lacking

Note: Moved Pt to M1 for short period to assess flight in a larger enclosure - Pt demonstrated better maneuverability than previously shown in SF2 but still could use work. Pt still attempts to fly to ceiling/rafters and then attempts to cling to wall. Due to Pt's ability to kill live prey we are continuing w/ care. Will continue to monitor and see what Pt shows us.

HB: Very high stress throughout PT.

**A quick Google search showed that erratic flight is the norm for BUOWs:

"Burrowing owls exhibit a unique flight style, often characterized by jerky, irregular wing beats and frequent long glides."

"Burrowing owls' flight is not smooth, with their wings flapping in an uneven manner."

Notes:
Erratic, panicked, uneven, noisy flight. High stress! Flew 5 single lengths but mainly flew in small circles. Flew up at ceiling and grabbed at wall and door numerous times. Landed on ground 2x. Panting heavily with wide eyes, so PT was stopped.

Note: Admitted BUOW from Denton transferred from Denton animal control. Pt is a confirmed window strike case. Pt presented as BAR verging on QAR w/ poor hydration and fair BSC (Did not visualize BCS - will do when in hand for post-admit exam 3/20) Seemingly NSF musculoskeletal at this time. Pt did however have a noticeable L wing droop as well as what looks like a potential synechia OS. Administered 0.09cc Meloxicam PO and 7cc LRS SQ - L leg. Ideally would have supplemental O2 but deemed the "O2 incubator" too loud and disruptive for current SICU patients. No food dropped.
